What would it feel like to levitate? All the songs in this playlist have an airy quality to them: they put me among the birds and clouds. Some tracks are more delicate than others (Bounce and Glass in particular), for gentle, breezy daydreaming. Others soar through the skies with energetically delivered riffs (the interaction between the synth, the saxophone and the piano in Can You Hear Him, and the strings complementing Kate Bush’s voice in Cloudbusting).
The trumpet in Teardrop in Avishai Cohen’s rendition switches between gentle fluttering and powerful soaring, which adds a surprising dimension to the song: the original version by Massive Attack feels more grounded and staccato. Another cover of Teardrop was released on the same week when Cohen’s version did in spring 2020: Thana Alexa produced her own version building on her talent as a vocalist and looping artist.
Glass and Kyoto Rain combine a sense of calmness with a sense of busyness. Zooming in, you notice the tiny details in constant movement. Zooming out, you are hit with stillness: like a group of icicles under the winter sun, you only see the tiny melted drops if you look long enough.
